Te Tohu Paetahi (2022)

Te Tohu Paetahi, our total immersion Māori language programme, has paved the way for the revitalisation of our ancestral language and 2016 saw Te Tohu Paetahi programme celebrating its 25th birthday. From 2019, Te Tohu Paetahi is available in both Hamilton and Tauranga.

The focus of the programme is to provide students with a unique Māori language immersion pathway in which papers in te reo Māori are concentrated into a one-year Diploma. The goal is to produce students who can speak te reo Māori fluently, competently and proficiently.

Note: Te Tohu Paetahi is an intensive programme with classes running Monday to Friday, from 9am to 3pm.

  • Prescriptions for the DipTTP

    To complete the Diploma in Te Tohu Paetahi (DipTTP) students must complete MAORI111, MAORI112, MAORI114, MAORI206, MAORI211, MAORI212, MAORI311 and MAORI312.

    From 2023 students must complete MAORI111, MAORI112, MAORI115, MAORI211, MAORI212, MAORI215, MAORI311 and MAORI312.

    This paper extends the language and communication skills developed in MAORI111 to include the language of mealtimes, instructions/commands, expression/idioms, describing clothing and parts of the body, and a variety of Marae protocol.

    This paper builds on the skills acquired in MAORI211, developing further language skills required in Maori for communication about feelings, emotions, and describing the weather.
