The subject encompasses a broad range of topics that reflect the far-reaching nature of the field. Educators are interested in how knowledge, skills and values are constructed, accumulated, and conveyed through formal and informal means.
The qualifications listed below are not Initial Teacher Education programmes. See the Teaching subject.
Education is available as a minor.
To complete a minor in Education, students must complete 60 points from the papers listed under the subject Education or from the lists for Arts Education, Language and Literacy Education, Maori Education, or Mathematics Education including at least one of EDSOC101, EDUCA110 or HMDEV100, and at least 30 points above 100 level.

The qualification regulations define the requirements for the Graduate Diploma. Papers should be taken from those listed for Adult Learning, Arts Education, Digital Learning, Education, Education and Society, Human Development and/or Language and Literacy Education. Within the Graduate Diploma a specialisation is available in Arts Education.
Prescriptions for the PGCert(Ed)
The qualification regulations define the requirements for the Postgraduate Certificate. Papers should be taken from the prescriptions for Adult Learning, Arts Education, Counselling Studies, Education, Education and Society, Human Development, Language and Literacy Education, Mathematics Education, and/or Science, Technology and Environmental Education.
The eEducation specialisation is not available in 2021.
Prescriptions for the PGDip(Ed)
The qualification regulations define the requirements for the Postgraduate Diploma. Papers should be taken from the prescriptions for Adult Learning, Arts Education, Counselling Studies, Education, Education and Society, Human Development, Language and Literacy Education, Mathematics Education, and/or Science, Technology and Environmental Education (30 points may be taken from any other Postgraduate Diploma subject).
Within the Postgraduate Diploma, specialisations are available in eEducation, Global Studies in Education, and Maori Medium Teaching/Te Ropu Tohu Paerua.
Prescriptions for the MEd
To complete the Master of Education, students must take 180 points at 500 level including at least 30 points from the subjects Adult Learning, Arts Education, Counselling Studies, Education, Education and Society, Educational Leadership, Human Development, Language and Literacy Education, Mathematics Education, or Science, Technology and Environmental Education; one of the following Research Methods papers EDUCA500, EDUCA557 or MAOED500; and one of a Directed Study equivalent to 30 points, a Dissertation equivalent to 60 points, or a Thesis equivalent to 90 or 120 points.
Within the Master of Education, specialisations are available in Global Studies in Education, Professional Learning and STEM Education.
Within the Master of Education in Education, a specialisation is available in Te Ropu Tohu Paerua.
Up to 30 points may be selected from outside the field of the degree.

The Master of Philosophy is a one year research-based degree in which students undertake a programme of approved and supervised research that leads to a thesis which critically investigates an approved topic of substance and significance, demonstrates expertise in the methods of research and scholarship, displays intellectual independence and makes a substantial original contribution to the subject area concerned, and is of publishable quality.

Prescriptions for the EdD
The Doctor of Education is a three-year full-time or six-year part-time professional doctorate in education for experienced education practitioners who have a strong academic record and who want to develop their profession through research. Students in this programme complete guided coursework and a thesis. This thesis critically investigates an approved topic of substance and significance, demonstrates expertise in the methods of research and scholarship, and displays intellectual independence. It makes a substantial original contribution to the research area and is of publishable quality.
