This paper focuses on international mathematics education reform approaches to the teaching of mathematics/numeracy. It provides a critical analysis of theoretical issues underpinning the teaching and learning of mathematics, and makes connections between the current curriculum document, the mathematics standards, and the New Zealand Number Framework.
